The Infamous “Croatian Alcatraz”
What You Need To Visit
Planning a trip to an island ? Mini taxi boats take you to nearby islands. A tradition that our ancestors followed.
If you would like to go on an excursion, you can also book entire routes. Glass boat trips are highly recommended. In this boat it is possible for you to marvel at the underwater world of Lopar with dry feet. Enjoy full-day trips to the nearby islets of Sv. Grgur, Goli otok, to Baška on the island of Krk, to Košljun and Zavratnica (a bay shaped like a fjord). There are also more and more offers for fishing with tourists (“fishing”), including subsequent consumption of the fish.
Due to the short distance of only 120 kilometers, the Plitvice Lakes are also a real attraction for day trippers. This is the largest and oldest Croatian national park. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
Visit the infamous “Croatian Alcatraz”
Logistically perfectly located and impossible to escape, this uninhabited island named “Goli Otok” is now a tourist attraction but in the past served as a prison for all dissidents of the then regime.
If you think that Alcatraz is the hardest to escape, imagine what it’s like to escape from an island where there is no shade at all and the mixing of river water at the foot of the Velebit mountain and the sea water that surrounds the island causes the strongest sea currents !
The 2nd Greenest Island On The Adriatic Sea
Due to its wealth of greenery, Sveti Grgur has historically been suitable for livestock grazing, and today it represents a huge potential for the development of hunting tourism – the real attraction is the frequent encounters with fallow deer that simply eat out of your hand !
However, many tourists, especially boaters who find this island particularly attractive, are also interested in the history of the island, which in its past was a notorious political prison for women, and its remains are still visible today.
The Largest & Oldest Croatian National Park
Due to the short distance of only 120 kilometers, the Plitvice Lakes are also a real attraction for day trippers. This is the largest and oldest Croatian national park. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
The most attractive trip
Catch your meal yourself !
Recently, for many tourists, the most attractive trips around the Lopar peninsula are those that include fishing.
As part of these organized activities, you can learn a lot about fishing as a traditional activity on the Adriatic, fish by yourself and at the end of the trip enjoy gastronomic delicacies prepared from freshly caught fish !
